Carapelli Introduces EVO Olive Oil in Blue Glass to Protect Quality

Carapelli, a prominent name in the Italian olive oil sector, has launched Carapelli Blu, an extra virgin olive oil (EVO) packaged in a distinctive blue glass bottle. This strategic decision is rooted in scientific findings that highlight the critical role of packaging color in preserving olive oil integrity against environmental degradation.

The selection of blue glass is a direct response to research indicating that light exposure is a primary trigger for photo-oxidation, a process that progressively diminishes EVO quality. A study conducted in collaboration with the University of Perugia provided a strong empirical basis for this innovation. The research quantitatively demonstrated that blue-tinted glass offers significantly superior protection in slowing the quality decline of olive oil compared to other glass colors tested under laboratory conditions.

This finding holds particular relevance as exported Italian EVO, often displayed on foreign shelves, is susceptible to quality degradation from light exposure during transit and display. The initiative aims to ensure that the intrinsic characteristics of premium Italian olive oil remain intact until it reaches the consumer. Furthermore, blue-tinted glasses are preferred by professionals for tasting oil to prevent focus on color, which is not indicative of quality.

Sustainability was also a central consideration in the development of the Carapelli Blu packaging. The bottles are manufactured by Verallia, a company specializing in healthy, aesthetic, and sustainable glass packaging design, manufacturing, and recycling. Specifically, the Carapelli Blu bottles incorporate 65.7% recycled material, aligning with Verallia’s commitment to circularity and carbon footprint reduction. Verallia's Vista line, for instance, is made from 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) glass and is claimed to consume 40% less energy during production compared to virgin glass.

This packaging innovation extends beyond damage prevention; it is an effort to enhance the overall consumer experience. By maintaining the optimal flavor, aroma, and color profile of the olive oil, Carapelli seeks to preserve the essence of the product, a value often associated with careful tradition and production processes. The use of scientifically validated blue glass thus represents a convergence of material science, manufacturing expertise, and dedication to unparalleled Italian EVO quality.
