Mercedes-Benz Launches VLE Electric Luxury People-Mover on New 800-Volt Architecture
Edited by: Tetiana Pin
Mercedes-Benz officially introduced the all-new VLE in March 2026, marking a strategic entry into the electric luxury people-mover segment. The manufacturer positions the vehicle as a 'grand limousine,' integrating the comfort of a high-end sedan with the functional versatility expected of an MPV. This launch directly challenges competitors such as the Volkswagen ID. Buzz and the Kia EV9, while also targeting the premium segment occupied by models like the Volvo EX90.

The VLE is the first production model built upon the VAN.EA architecture, a new modular and scalable 800-volt platform designed for enhanced efficiency. This dedicated electric architecture supports both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations through a three-module design centered on a standardized battery housing. Mercedes-Benz anticipates significant synergy, as a related VAN.CA platform for combustion models will share approximately 70 percent of its components, facilitating flexible production strategies.
The initial rear-wheel-drive variant, the VLE 300 electric, features a single motor producing 203 kW (272 hp) and is equipped with a 115 kWh battery pack. This configuration achieves a preliminary WLTP range exceeding 700 km, or approximately 435 miles, with an energy consumption rate around 1.86 kWh per 10 kilometers. A more powerful VLE 400 4MATIC variant is scheduled for release, incorporating an additional rear axle motor to deliver over 300 kW (409 hp) and an acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h between 6.4 and 6.5 seconds.
The 800-volt system enables ultra-fast charging capabilities, reaching peak rates up to 300-320 kW, which allows for the addition of approximately 355 km (about 220 miles WLTP) in just 15 minutes. The platform also integrates bi-directional charging functionality. For dynamic performance, the VLE incorporates Airmatic air suspension and rear-axle steering that turns up to seven degrees, resulting in a tight turning circle of 10.9 meters.
The interior is engineered for an executive passenger experience, offering flexible seating for five to eight occupants. Manual rear seats feature integrated rollers for easy adjustment or removal, alongside optional electronically adjustable Grand Comfort seats that include massage functions and stowable tray tables. Driver interface relies on the latest MB.OS operating system, complemented by an optional MBUX Superscreen spanning the dashboard. A notable feature for rear occupants is an available 31.3-inch, 8K resolution screen that retracts from the roof.
The vehicle’s physical dimensions, approximately 5.3 meters long and two meters wide, position it as larger than rivals like the Volkswagen ID. Buzz. With a towing capacity rated at 2,500 kg and advanced driver assistance systems, the VLE is engineered for both long-distance luxury travel and practical utility, setting a benchmark for the segment ahead of its expected arrival in the US market.
