Renault 5 E-Tech 2026 Test Drive Confirms Urban EV Contender Status

The initial positive impressions of the all-electric Renault 5 E-Tech 2026 model year have been validated following recent test drives, positioning the vehicle as a significant entrant in the affordable urban electric vehicle segment. The car is being recognized for its design appeal, engaging driving dynamics, and practical features, marking a key moment in the contemporary automotive market.
Renault Group CEO Luca de Meo has noted that the vehicle’s release aligns with a substantial transition among European consumers toward electric, connected, and sustainable mobility solutions, symbolizing the manufacturer's ongoing transformation. The vehicle is built on Renault’s new, EV-native AmpR Small platform, which was engineered specifically for smaller electric vehicles and incorporates advanced features such as a multi-link rear suspension, a component often reserved for larger vehicle classes.
Driving performance emerged as a primary strength, characterized by a planted, secure feel described as akin to a GTi experience. The standard 150-horsepower motor output, when paired with the 52kWh battery option, contributes to this dynamic capability. The AmpR Small platform facilitates an extremely low center of gravity and optimized weight distribution, with wheels positioned near the four corners of the body to enhance driving pleasure.
Range and charging specifications provide clarity on its utility. The 52kWh battery option is rated for a WLTP range of up to 255 miles (approximately 410km), while the 40kWh battery delivers approximately 196 miles of WLTP range. The maximum DC charging rate is fixed at 100kW, enabling a recharge from 10% to 80% capacity in about 30 minutes. For practicality, the boot space on the larger battery version is reported to range between 277 and 326 liters.
In the United Kingdom market, official starting pricing for the 120hp Evolution trim is set at £22,995, increasing to £28,995 for the 150hp Iconic Five trim, making it competitively priced against rivals like the MINI Cooper Electric and Fiat 500e. The vehicle’s compact dimensions, measuring just 3.92 meters in length, establish it as an ideal city car with minimal overhangs. Design elements include an illuminated '5' motif on the bonnet to indicate the charge level and vertical rear lights connected by a black trim piece.
The Renault 5 E-Tech, which has been produced since 2024, represents a modern reinterpretation of the classic R5 silhouette. Its market validation is underscored by its recent win in the 'Urban Living' category at the 2026 Carwow Car of the Year Awards, reflecting its overall appeal and suitability for city use.
