Indonesian Students Launch Premium Dessert Brand from Local Bananas

Edited by: Olga Samsonova

Three students from Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia have established a new culinary venture named "Bananies," aimed at transforming locally sourced bananas into a portfolio of high-value, market-ready food products. This initiative directly addresses the need for value addition in regional agricultural outputs, shifting focus from raw commodity sales to sophisticated processed goods.

The Bananies product line is structured around diverse processed banana items, categorized as Crispy & Nugget, Roll & Boom, and various Banana Cake formulations. To ensure the brand appeals to contemporary consumer tastes and maintains market competitiveness, the offerings incorporate a variety of sweet toppings and artisanal jams, modernizing the traditional flavor profile of local bananas. The conceptual foundation for this business model originated within a formal Marketing Management course, establishing a clear academic basis for the enterprise.

The transition from concept to commercial viability was significantly supported by the students' participation in an intensive Business Incubator Program, a mechanism frequently employed by Indonesian higher education institutions to cultivate entrepreneurial talent. This rigorous development phase within the incubator environment was crucial for securing the venture's legal standing, which now includes a NIB (Nomor Induk Berusaha) and registered Intellectual Property Rights, providing a firm legal structure for future expansion.

Business incubators across Indonesia serve a vital function in connecting academia with industry, frequently supplying structured support that encompasses training, mentorship, and business matching. This structured support parallels the guidance received by the Bananies creators, aligning with national efforts to foster student entrepreneurship, as evidenced by the high accreditation received by similar hubs, such as the Science and Technology Regional Institute Business Incubator at IPB University.

By concentrating on value-added processing, the Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia students demonstrate a sophisticated grasp of modern food product development and intellectual property management. This strategic approach positions their local agricultural resource to compete effectively within national, and potentially international, markets, reflecting broader global trends in culinary innovation aimed at maximizing resource utility.
