Digital Engagement Challenges Traditional Metrics of Youth Reading Proficiency
Edited by: Olga Samsonova
A prevailing narrative suggesting a decline in youth literacy is increasingly being countered by contemporary evidence, indicating a fundamental mismatch in how reading engagement is perceived rather than an actual crisis of reading itself. Research, including analyses from Cuesta in 2021 and Echarri in 2025, documents vigorous participation by young people on digital literary hubs such as Goodreads and Wattpad, where they actively contribute content and engage in critical discourse. This digital activity confirms that reading remains a vital cultural practice, albeit one that has migrated from traditional print to screen-based formats.
Modern consumption patterns highlight a marked acceleration in the popularity of specific youth literature genres, notably romance and fantasy, a trend significantly amplified by social media phenomena like BookTok. For instance, the romantasy subgenre has seen substantial growth, particularly among younger readers aged 13 to 34, with fantasy books driving 45% of BookTok-related sales on Amazon in 2025. Adults frequently overlook this engagement because it manifests across diverse digital mediums, encompassing electronic novels, manga, and user-generated fanfiction, formats often excluded from conventional validation.
Statistical indicators strongly affirm high levels of engagement among younger demographics across various regions. In Spain, for example, a significant 75.3% of individuals between 14 and 24 years old reported reading for leisure in 2024, positioning them as the most dedicated reading cohort. Similarly, Mexico’s INEGI registered a notable rebound in reading activity in 2025, spearheaded by young readers embracing a wide array of materials, including digital texts. The United Kingdom also saw a 6.2% increase in fiction sales volume in 2024, reaching 64,511,922 units, with the romantasy genre fueling a 41.3% value increase in science fiction and fantasy between 2023 and 2024.
The resistance observed toward assigned school reading material is rarely an outright refusal to read, but rather an opposition to mandatory texts that fail to resonate with current youth interests, as pointed out by Echarri in 2025. The central friction point lies in the adult dismissal of popular youth choices, often categorizing these engaging genres as lacking serious literary merit. This perspective fails to acknowledge that reading remains an essential method for young people to acquire culture and cultivate critical thinking skills, even when accessed digitally.
Progressive educational philosophies are now advocating for the systematic recognition and validation of current youth reading practices, moving away from the imposition of traditional consumption models. This shift was demonstrated at the LITERAL 2025 International Youth Literature Festival, held on November 8 and 9 in Buenos Aires at the Biblioteca Parque de la Estación. Organized by the Ministry of Culture of the City of Buenos Aires and the Cátedra Vargas Llosa, the free event featured international figures like Spanish authors Iria and Selene, and Mexican creators Raiza Revelles and Claudia Ramírez, underscoring the cultural vitality of youth literature beyond established canons.
