Danish New Vehicle Market Reaches 81.6% Battery-Electric Share in February

Denmark recorded an 81.6% market share for new battery-electric vehicle (BEV) registrations in February 2026, according to data compiled by Bilstatistik.dk and reported by Mobility Denmark. This figure represents 9,736 new BEVs registered out of 11,933 total new passenger cars sold during the month. While total registrations saw a modest 2.8% year-over-year increase compared to February 2025, the adoption rate among private consumers reached 94.4% for fully electric models, indicating a transition to mass-market acceptance.
Mobility Denmark CEO Mads Rørvig attributed the acceleration to consistent consumer preference for environmentally conscious vehicles alongside maintained economic incentives established by political support. The government's decision, as part of the 2026 Finance Act agreement, postponed a planned increase in the registration tax for zero-emission vehicles, keeping the 2025 tax structure in effect for 2026. Further bolstering the cost-competitiveness of electric vehicles against internal combustion engine (ICE) models, the electricity tax was lowered to the European Union minimum starting January 1, 2026.
The regulatory framework includes specific fiscal advantages, such as an annual ownership tax set at DKK 920 for a BEV in 2026, compared to DKK 1,160 for a petrol car emitting 100g CO₂/km. This is supported by a fixed deduction of DKK 161,300 for BEVs in registration tax calculations. Rørvig indicated that sustained market momentum is linked to this policy framework, with future development dependent on subsequent regulatory design.
Market preferences show a strong leaning toward larger, electrified utility vehicles, as eight of the top ten best-selling models in February 2026 were classified as SUVs. The Toyota bZ4X led sales with 1,364 registrations. The Volkswagen Group secured significant penetration with four MEB platform-based SUVs—the Škoda Elroq (681 units), Volkswagen ID.4 (575 units), Škoda Enyaq (467 units), and Audi Q4 e-tron (400 units)—ranking among the top sellers. The inclusion of the Xpeng G6, with 300 registrations, highlights the growing competitive viability of Chinese original equipment manufacturers in the Danish market.
Denmark's electrification level is approaching the near-total adoption seen in Norway, which registered approximately 98% BEV share in February 2026. This domestic performance contrasts with the broader European trend, where the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) reported the EU average BEV market share for January 2026 stood at 19.3%. The Danish market's rapid ascent demonstrates the impact of targeted policy implementation, though continued stability appears contingent on ongoing governmental fiscal commitments.
