Kia to Deploy Boston Dynamics' Electric Atlas Robots in Georgia Plant by 2029

Kia Corporation has formalized plans to integrate Boston Dynamics' advanced humanoid robot, Atlas, into its manufacturing facility in Georgia, USA. The deployment, announced during Kia's '2026 CEO Investor Day' on April 9, 2026, is scheduled to begin in the latter half of 2029. This action is a component of the broader mid-term business strategy of parent company Hyundai Motor Group, which intends to embed sophisticated robotics across its American manufacturing operations, following an initial introduction at the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) starting in 2028.
The technology slated for integration is the fully electric iteration of the Atlas robot, which entered commercial production in early 2026, replacing the hydraulic version retired in 2024. This next-generation unit is engineered for commercial utility, featuring 56 degrees of freedom and the capability to lift loads up to 50 kg (110 lbs), thereby offering increased industrial agility. These robots will also incorporate cognitive functionalities powered by AI foundation models from Google DeepMind to manage complex manufacturing assignments with a higher degree of autonomy.
This technological transition is supported by a significant financial commitment: Kia plans to invest 49 trillion won (approximately $33 billion) through 2030, with 43 percent allocated to advancements in electrification, autonomous driving systems, and robotics. The electric Atlas is designed for continuous operation, utilizing swappable batteries that permit autonomous navigation to charging stations to maintain operational uptime. The initial integration at the Georgia plant will target 16 core manufacturing processes, with plans for a phased expansion to other global Kia sites.
Hyundai Motor Group, which holds an 80% stake in Boston Dynamics, has set an objective to establish a factory capable of producing 30,000 Atlas robots annually by 2028. Currently, the entire 2026 production allocation for the new Atlas model is fully committed to internal Hyundai facilities and Google DeepMind. Kia President and CEO Song Ho-sung identified robotics, alongside EVs, hybrids, and autonomous driving, as primary accelerators for the company's projected period of fastest growth.
This strategic focus on automation occurs as Kia adjusts its near-term electrification goals, recently lowering its 2030 EV sales target by approximately 20% to 1 million units to reflect current market conditions, while maintaining an overall vehicle sales target of 4.13 million units by the same year. The successful integration of the Atlas robot, described by Boston Dynamics GM Zack Jackowski as their most production-friendly design, will be central to achieving these manufacturing competitiveness objectives. Furthermore, Kia is exploring synergistic applications, including linking the robots with its Purpose-Built Vehicles (PBVs) for potential 'last-mile' consumer delivery services.
