Denza, the premium electric vehicle sub-brand of Chinese manufacturer BYD, formally entered the European automotive market on April 8, 2026, during an event held at the Paris Opera. The introduction featured the Denza Z9 GT, a substantial shooting brake designed to compete with established luxury performance vehicles such as the Porsche Panamera. This launch represents a strategic move by BYD to gain traction in the competitive European premium New Energy Vehicle (NEV) sector, with plans to establish more than 150 retail locations across the continent by the end of 2026.
The initial European specification focuses on the high-performance pure Electric Vehicle (EV) variant of the Z9 GT. This model utilizes a three-motor setup to produce 850 kW, equivalent to approximately 1140 horsepower, and generates 1210 Nm of torque. The powertrain, which includes a 230 kW front motor and dual 310 kW rear motors, allows the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.7 seconds. Built on BYD's e3 technology platform and incorporating the second-generation Blade Battery, the EV variant has an approximate WLTP range rating of 599 kilometers (about 372 miles) from its 122.49 kWh capacity.
A key component of Denza’s European debut is the introduction of BYD's proprietary 1500 kW ultra-high-power 'Flash Charging' technology. This system facilitates rapid energy replenishment, capable of charging the second-generation Blade Battery from a 10% to 70% State of Charge (SOC) in five minutes, reaching 97% in nine minutes under standard ambient conditions. Even in temperatures as low as -30°C, the system can achieve a 20% to 97% charge in twelve minutes. To support this infrastructure, BYD has committed to deploying 3,000 of its planned 6,000 global overseas Flash Charging stations within Europe over the next twelve months, initially targeting France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom.
The Z9 GT measures 5195 mm in length with a 3125 mm wheelbase, providing a spacious interior appointed with Nappa leather, wood trim, and eight-way adjustable front seats featuring ten-point massage, cooling, and heating functions. Technological features include a 17.3-inch central display, flanking 13.2-inch screens, a 20-speaker Dolby Atmos sound system, and dual 50W wireless chargers. The vehicle incorporates rear-wheel steering, resulting in a tight 5.35-meter turning circle and enabling maneuvers such as 'crab walking'. Pre-sales pricing for the EV model commenced across seven European countries, including France and Germany, starting at approximately 115,000 euros.
Future variants include a rear-wheel-drive-only version slated for later in 2026, projected to achieve a WLTP range up to 800 kilometers. Additionally, a Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) version is scheduled for introduction, utilizing a 127 kW 2.0-liter turbocharged engine alongside electric components to deliver a combined system output of 570 kW. This PHEV model will feature a 63.82 kWh battery, estimated to provide an electric-only range of 200 kilometers, with an expected combined range approaching 800 kilometers.
