Blue Origin NS-38 Mission Launches 2026 Cadence with Crew Change

Six different stories. One unforgettable journey to space.

Blue Origin initiated its 2026 operational schedule on January 22, 2026, with the New Shepard mission designated NS-38. The launch sequence began at Launch Site One in West Texas at 11:25 a.m. Eastern Time, following a brief hold due to unauthorized personnel on the range. This flight represented the 38th overall mission for the New Shepard vehicle and the 17th crewed endeavor for the program.

The crew onboard included: Timothy Drexler, Linda Edwards, Alain Fernandez, Alberto Gutiérrez Pascual, Jim Hendren, and Laura Stiles

The autonomous, reusable rocket-capsule system propelled the capsule to an altitude of approximately 106 kilometers, definitively surpassing the Kármán line, the 100-kilometer boundary generally accepted as the threshold of space. The entire suborbital trajectory lasted roughly 10 minutes, concluding with the capsule's parachute-assisted descent and the booster's powered vertical landing back on the designated pad. The flight carried five paying customers: civil contractor and pilot Timothy Drexler; retired OB/GYN Dr. Linda Edwards; international developer Alain Fernandez; tech founder Alberto Gutiérrez; and retired Air Force Colonel and F-15 pilot Jim Hendren.

A significant operational adjustment occurred shortly before launch when Andrew Yaffe was withdrawn due to illness, scheduled for a subsequent mission. Laura Stiles, Blue Origin's Director of New Shepard Launch Operations, assumed the vacant 'Crew Member 7' position. Stiles, who joined Blue Origin in 2013 and holds a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering Sciences from the University of Colorado Boulder, was notified of the opportunity two days prior to the flight.

Phil Joyce, Senior Vice President for New Shepard, stated the company's focus on delivering transformational customer experiences by leveraging the platform's established reliability. This mission sets the operational tempo for 2026, aligning with a September 2025 indication from Joyce that the company aims to increase its flight cadence from near-monthly to approximately weekly in the coming years. To support this acceleration, Blue Origin plans to introduce three new next-generation New Shepard vehicles later in 2026.

With the successful completion of NS-38, Blue Origin has facilitated the ascent of 98 individuals into space through the New Shepard program, representing 92 unique individuals. This mission continues a trend of diverse clientele, following NS-37 in December 2025, which included the first wheelchair user to fly above the Kármán line. The New Shepard system, named for Alan Shepard, is engineered for full reusability, with its capsule featuring large windows for passengers to observe Earth against the vacuum of space.
