Tata Sierra debuts with an unprecedented security system.
Tata Motors Reintroduces Sierra SUV with Unconventional Safety Demonstration
Edited by: Tetiana Pin
Tata Motors officially relaunched the iconic Sierra SUV with a completely reimagined 2025 model on November 25, 2025. This reintroduction of a nameplate that previously ran from 1991 to 2003 signals a strategic effort to secure a position within the premium mid-size SUV segment, slotting the new model between the existing Curvv and Harrier offerings in the company's portfolio. The introductory ex-showroom price for the new Sierra begins at Rs 11.49 Lakh, with customer bookings scheduled to open on December 16, 2025, and initial deliveries for the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) version commencing on January 15, 2026.
The launch event was marked by a distinctive safety validation: a live, full-scale, head-on collision test involving two new-generation Sierra prototypes. This demonstration, conducted at approximately 50 km/h with an offset configuration, was designed to emulate real-world moving vehicle impacts, diverging from standard regulatory tests against a fixed barrier. Tata Motors reported that this internal assessment confirmed the structural integrity of the passenger cell remained intact post-impact, with vehicle doors remaining operable, underscoring the vehicle's structural robustness.
The 2025 Sierra integrates nostalgic design cues, including the original's boxy silhouette and signature glasshouse, with contemporary engineering built upon Tata’s versatile ARGOS platform, which stands for All-terrain Ready, Omni-Energy and Geometry Scalable Architecture. This architecture supports future All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) capability and both ICE and electric powertrains. Initial powertrain options for the launch include a 1.5-litre TGDi turbo-petrol engine producing approximately 160 PS and 255 Nm, a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre petrol unit generating 106 PS and 145 Nm, and a 1.5-litre Kryojet diesel engine offering 118 PS.
Technological sophistication is evident in the vehicle's integration of the next-generation t.idal 2.0 electrical architecture, noted as the first Ethernet-based system in an Indian ICE vehicle, capable of data transfer speeds up to 1 Gbps and featuring 5G connectivity. Safety features are comprehensive, with six airbags, a 360-degree camera, and a Level 2+ Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) suite with over 20 functions as standard. Higher trims may incorporate premium amenities such as a panoramic sunroof and an advanced triple-screen setup, potentially including a 12.3-inch passenger entertainment screen.
Tata Motors Chief Commercial Officer, Vivek Srivatsa, has stated that the company is revitalizing the Sierra for the current market, moving beyond sole reliance on nostalgia. The flexibility of the ARGOS platform suggests future expansion, with an electric version slated for a later launch and a potential AWD model for the ICE version anticipated in early 2027. This strategy supports Tata Motors' broader investment in new products to target a 20% market share by 2030.
