Protein-Rich Menus: A Growing Trend in the Restaurant Industry

Edited by: Olga Samsonova

Restaurants nationwide are increasingly highlighting protein-centric dishes, a response to growing consumer demand for healthier and more substantial meals. This trend is evident across various dining establishments, from casual cafes to fast-food chains, mirroring a broader societal emphasis on fitness and well-being.

Starbucks is currently testing a protein-enhanced cold foam in select U.S. locations. This innovation aims to increase the protein content of cold beverages by approximately 15 grams without adding sugar. Meanwhile, chains like Chick-fil-A and Panda Express are drawing attention to their existing high-protein options. An 8-count of Chick-fil-A's grilled chicken nuggets provides 25 grams of protein, while a 12-count offers 38 grams. Their Cool Wrap is noted for containing 42 grams of protein. Panda Express's Grilled Teriyaki Chicken offers 33 grams of protein per serving, and their Teriyaki Chicken provides 41 grams. The chain's Balanced Protein Plates, such as the Harmonious Macros Plate with Grilled Teriyaki Chicken and Broccoli Beef, can deliver up to 57 grams of protein.

The heightened interest in high-protein diets is influenced by several factors, including the widespread adoption of weight-loss medications that encourage consumption of nutrient-dense foods for satiety. Younger generations are also proactively adopting healthier lifestyles, seeking foods that support their fitness goals. This has solidified chicken's position as a dominant protein source in the U.S. food landscape, with poultry sales increasing by 1.5% from 2022 to 2023, attributed to convenience and health benefits. Industry data indicates a significant rise in protein consumption, with 61% of Americans increasing their protein intake in 2024, up from 48% in 2019. Social media further amplifies this trend, with a substantial year-on-year increase in protein-related content. As consumers continue to prioritize protein for weight management, muscle building, and overall health, the food industry is expected to continue innovating with protein-forward solutions that balance affordability, quality, and taste.
