"Elizabeth II: A Life in Fashion" Exhibition Opens at Buckingham Palace
Edited by: Katerina S.
On April 10, 2026, the King’s Gallery at Buckingham Palace launched a major exhibition titled "Elizabeth II: A Life Through Style" to mark the centenary of the late monarch’s birth. Running until October 18, 2026, the display is the largest showcase of the Queen's fashion ever assembled, featuring nearly 200 items of clothing and accessories, almost half of which are being seen by the public for the first time.
The exhibition was curated by Caroline de Guitaut, Surveyor of the King’s Works of Art. It traces Elizabeth II’s stylistic evolution across ten decades, highlighting her strategic use of color and millinery. Notable among the exhibits are iconic creations by Norman Hartnell, including her 1947 wedding dress and 1953 coronation robe. The coronation robe, which took eight months to complete, was crafted from satin using silk sourced from Lady Hart Dyke’s silk farm in Kent.
The display also features early works by couturiers Edward Molyneux and Jeanne Lanvin, alongside a christening gown originally commissioned by Queen Victoria. Beyond ceremonial attire, the exhibition underscores the Queen's impact on modern British design by showcasing her everyday wardrobe. This section includes tweed jackets and tartan skirts designed by Norman Hartnell in the 1950s, as well as a 1960s clear mackintosh by Hardy Amies.
A highlight of the collection is the pair of identical peach cocktail dresses designed by Angela Kelly, which were worn by the Queen’s stunt double during the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony. Archival materials, such as sketches and fabric swatches, illustrate the monarch’s own creative input in shaping her wardrobe. Curator Caroline de Guitaut noted that the Queen had a very clear vision of her image and knew exactly how she wanted to appear.
The final section of the exhibition is dedicated to contemporary British designers—including Erdem Moralioglu, Richard Quinn, and Christopher Kane—who continue to draw inspiration from the monarch’s aesthetic legacy. Their creations are juxtaposed with corresponding pieces from the Queen’s archive, demonstrating the enduring influence of her style on modern fashion. Richard Quinn, the inaugural recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design, emphasized how the Queen’s style significantly shaped British fashion throughout nine decades.
