Stefano Gabbana Steps Down as Chairman of Dolce & Gabbana
Edited by: Katerina S.
The global fashion industry is currently discussing a significant leadership shift at Dolce & Gabbana following Stefano Gabbana's departure as Chairman of the Board. Gabbana had held the position since the brand's founding in 1985. Although he effectively stepped down in December 2025, official confirmation only surfaced in April 2026 within the company's financial reports. Alfonso Dolce, the current CEO and brother of co-founder Domenico Dolce, assumed the responsibilities of Chairman in January 2026.
This transition coincides with a period of intensive financial maneuvering for the luxury giant. Despite total revenue rising to 1.9 billion euros in 2024–2025, the company's gross operating margin fell from 80.9 million euros to 30.7 million euros over the same period, signaling operational challenges. Negotiations are currently underway with bank lenders to restructure debt obligations totaling approximately 450 million euros. The company is determined to maintain its independence and is actively seeking a fresh capital injection of up to 150 million euros. Financial pressure is being exacerbated by a general slowdown in the luxury sector and ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly the impact of the Middle East conflict on key markets.
To secure greater financial flexibility and ease credit terms, the fashion house has appointed Rothschild & Co as a financial advisor. As part of a strategy to strengthen its position, the company is considering asset monetization, including the sale of real estate holdings and a review of licensing agreements. Stefano Gabbana, who owns approximately 40% of the share capital, is currently evaluating potential scenarios for his stake.
The management team is expected to be bolstered by the addition of Stefano Cantino, the former CEO of Gucci who also brings experience from the Prada Group and Louis Vuitton.
Despite his formal departure from the chairmanship, the company maintains that Stefano Gabbana's creative role remains unchanged, as evidenced by his presence at recent men's and women's collection shows in Milan.
