La nueva especie fue bautizada #Patagoflora minima. Su nombre combina Patagonia + flos (flor) + “minima”, en contraste con el gigante saurópodo con el que convivió en el Cretácico.
Ancient Bloom Unearthed: 101-Million-Year-Old Flower Discovered Alongside Titanosaur Remains in Patagonia

An international team of researchers has unveiled a monumental paleontological find at the La Flecha site in Argentine Patagonia: the identification of Patagoflora minima. This minuscule fossilized flower, dating back 101 million years to the Early Cretaceous period, measures a mere 6 to 9 millimeters in diameter. Remarkably, this delicate specimen was unearthed in the same geological layer as the massive remains of the Patagotitan mayorum, one of the largest dinosaurs to ever walk the Earth. The findings, recently detailed in the scientific journal Cretaceous Research, represent a collaborative effort between the Egidio Feruglio Paleontology Museum (MEF) and CONICET, with contributions from the Conjunto Paleontológico de Teruel-Dinópolis Foundation and Cornell University.
The discovery is considered exceptionally rare due to the fragile nature of floral structures, which seldom survive the fossilization process, especially in proximity to heavy skeletal remains. Patagoflora minima stands as one of the oldest and most precisely dated examples of flowering plants, or angiosperms, ever found in the southern reaches of South America and the ancient supercontinent of Gondwana. Its name, a blend of "Patagonia" and "flora" with "minima" denoting its tiny size, highlights its significance in understanding early plant diversification in the Southern Hemisphere. Scientists revealed that the specimen was actually found by chance in 2014 during the painstaking extraction of more than 150 bones belonging to the Patagotitan mayorum.
Comparative studies with similar-aged fossils found in Teruel, Spain, suggest that flowering plants were already widespread across various continents during the early stages of the Cretaceous. The study of Patagoflora minima is instrumental in reconstructing the ancient environments and diets of prehistoric giants. Patagotitan mayorum, a herbivorous sauropod that lived approximately 113 to 100.5 million years ago, thrived in a warm, humid habitat. While the landscape was rich with conifers, ferns, and cycads, the presence of these early flowers adds a new layer to our understanding of the ecosystem that supported a creature measuring 31 meters in length and weighing between 50 and 57 metric tons.
Located within the Cerro Barcino Formation, the discovery in the Upper Aptian sediments marks the first time flowers from this specific era have been found in southern South America. This coexistence of tiny blossoms and gargantuan dinosaurs provides a unique perspective on a world that existed over 100 million years ago. It confirms that angiosperms were already diversifying even as gymnosperms like horsetails and ferns remained the dominant vegetation in the Patagonian landscape. Leading researchers, including Ignacio Escapa and Maria A. Gandolfo, emphasize that this find in the Chubut province is vital for mapping the ecosystems inhabited by the largest land animals in history.
Further analysis of fossilized pollen from other regions indicates that a major subgroup of angiosperms, characterized by tricolpate pollen, likely originated in the Africa-South America region during the Aptian age. While the Northern Hemisphere has historically provided more abundant data on early flowers, Patagonian discoveries like Patagoflora minima are crucial for balancing our knowledge of plant evolution in the southern latitudes. Patagonia continues to be a premier destination for paleontology, offering a wealth of information through the remains of Patagotitan mayorum and its surrounding flora, which together reveal the incredible biological adaptations of the Cretaceous period.
