Washington Appoints Greenland Envoy Amid Diplomatic Fallout and Economic Pressure

President Donald Trump on Sunday, December 22, 2025, formally designated Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as the special envoy tasked with advancing United States interests regarding the autonomous territory of Greenland. The appointment, which Trump stated was driven by national security imperatives—specifically citing the increased presence of Russian and Chinese naval vessels near the territory—was met with firm rejection from Danish and Greenlandic leadership. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen issued a joint declaration asserting, “You cannot annex another country, even with the argument of international security,” and affirming that Greenland belongs to its people.
