Xiaomi’s CyberOne Humanoid 'Interns' Take the Lead on Beijing EV Assembly Lines

In the opening days of March 2026, Xiaomi initiated a pivotal phase of operational trials for its CyberOne humanoid robots within the high-tech environment of its Beijing electric vehicle manufacturing facility. During this inaugural stage, a pair of CyberOne units was integrated directly into the production workflow, specifically tasked with the high-precision assembly of wheel nuts onto vehicle chassis. The two machines successfully managed to complete 90.2% of their assigned tasks during the trial period, proving their capability to operate within the established industrial cadence. Despite these impressive results, the robots are currently designated as "interns" undergoing evaluation rather than permanent members of the assembly workforce, as engineers continue to monitor their performance and refine their operational efficiency.

Lu Weibing, the President of Xiaomi, emphasized that the primary objective of this integration is to ensure that the robots can consistently adhere to the 76-second production cycle, which remains a non-negotiable requirement for precision assembly operations. While initial assessments suggest that a team of two skilled human operators can currently perform these specific nut-fastening tasks at a faster pace, the true success of the trial lies in validating the robots' reliability and accuracy under real-world manufacturing pressures. The goal is to reach a level of consistency that matches or exceeds human capability over long-duration shifts where fatigue might otherwise impact performance.

First unveiled to the public in 2022, the CyberOne robot remains in a continuous phase of development and assessment, as the model has not yet been released for commercial sale. The technological foundation of these machines is built upon the Xiaomi-Robotics-0 Vision-Language-Action (VLA) base model, which seamlessly integrates multimodal perception with advanced reinforcement learning. Standing 177 cm tall and weighing 52 kg, the CyberOne features 21 degrees of freedom and is equipped with the Mi-Sense depth-sensing module, which allows it to identify 45 distinct human emotional states and 85 different environmental sounds. This sensory suite ensures that the robot can navigate complex industrial landscapes while maintaining safety protocols near human colleagues.

Xiaomi’s broader strategy involves utilizing these authentic production environments to harvest critical operational data, which is then funneled back into iterative updates for the robots' control software. CEO Lei Jun has previously outlined ambitious plans for the comprehensive integration of humanoid robots across the company’s manufacturing sectors within the next five years, signaling a period of aggressive, long-term investment in automation. This move is set against a backdrop of intense global competition; in 2025, Chinese manufacturers accounted for a staggering 87% of the 13,317 humanoid robots sold worldwide, showcasing the country's dominance in the emerging robotics sector.

The strategic importance of these trials is further highlighted by financial projections from RBC Capital Markets, which estimate that the global market for humanoid robotics will soar to $9 trillion by the year 2050. With China expected to command more than 60% of this massive market share, Xiaomi’s current initiatives are positioned as a cornerstone of the nation’s broader technological expansion and industrial modernization efforts. By testing these "interns" today, Xiaomi is laying the groundwork for a future where robotic labor is a standard component of global industrial infrastructure, ensuring the company remains at the forefront of the next industrial revolution.
