PacificAus TV Expands Broadcasting Reach to Timor-Leste via Strategic RTTL Partnership
Edited by: Светлана Вельгуш
The Australian television initiative, PacificAus TV, has officially extended its broadcasting footprint into the territory of Timor-Leste. This significant development is the result of a strategic partnership established with the national broadcaster, Rádio e Televisão de Timor-Leste (RTTL). This alliance marks a pivotal step in regional media collaboration, providing local audiences with access to a broader range of high-quality programming and strengthening the cultural ties between the two nations through shared media experiences.
Managed by Free TV Australia and receiving substantial financial backing from the Australian Government, the PacificAus TV program offers RTTL and other regional partners cost-free access to premium Australian television content. The official launch of this service took place around March 10-11, 2026, serving as a cornerstone of Australia’s broader Indo-Pacific Broadcasting Strategy. This strategy is specifically designed to bolster media connections and foster cultural exchange throughout the diverse region. With the inclusion of Timor-Leste, the initiative's reach has grown from its previous 17 free-to-air broadcasters across 11 Pacific nations to a total of 18 broadcasters in 12 different countries. Bridget Fair, the Chief Executive Officer of Free TV Australia, emphasized that the operational model is built on collaborative partnerships with respected local entities like RTTL to ensure the seamless delivery of top-tier content to the public without financial barriers.
The timing of this expansion was strategically aligned with RTTL’s coverage of the AFC Women's Asian Cup, a major sporting event that resonates deeply with communities across the Indo-Pacific. Expedito Dias Ximenes, Timor-Leste’s Secretary of State for Social Communication, welcomed the partnership, highlighting its vital role in strengthening cultural and media ties while supporting the growth and visibility of women's football in Asia. Rosario da Graca Maia, the President of the Board of Directors at RTTL, noted that this collaboration significantly enhances both the quality and variety of content available to local viewers. This development aligns perfectly with the public broadcaster’s core mission to inform, educate, and inspire its audience. It is also a milestone for RTTL, which underwent a major structural transformation in October 2024, when it was reorganized into a public company to better fulfill its national mandate.
Under the terms of the new agreement, viewers in Timor-Leste, along with ten other Pacific nations, will have the opportunity to watch National Rugby League (NRL) matches throughout the 2026 season. The broadcast schedule includes two live matches and one delayed match every week, ensuring that sports fans have consistent access to high-level professional competition. As part of the Indo-Pacific Broadcasting Strategy, the Australian Government allocates 5.68 million Australian dollars annually to facilitate this expanded access to programming. This initiative is strategically aimed at supporting the long-term viability of regional media outlets and actively countering the spread of disinformation. By utilizing trusted local broadcasting channels, the program serves as a key tool for implementing Australia’s foreign policy objectives and promoting regional stability.
This expansion underscores a long-term commitment to building a more connected and resilient media landscape across the Indo-Pacific. By providing diverse content ranging from major sporting events to educational and entertainment programming, the partnership ensures that RTTL remains a central pillar of information and engagement for the Timorese people. The ongoing investment by the Australian government reflects the importance of cultural diplomacy and the shared values of the two nations, fostering a deeper understanding between their respective populations through the power of modern television broadcasting.
