Ukrainian Icebreaker 'Noosphere' Achieves Historic Delivery to UK's Rothera Station South of Antarctic Circle

The Ukrainian research vessel 'Noosphere' has marked a significant logistical milestone during its fifth Antarctic season. In December 2025, the icebreaker successfully navigated south of the Antarctic Circle for the first time in history to deliver essential supplies and personnel to the British research outpost known as Rothera Station.

This demanding mission, captained by Andriy Starish, represents the most challenging undertaking for the Ukrainian scientific fleet to date, underscoring the high level of operational readiness achieved by the service. Reaching Rothera required exceptional navigational skill from the crew. The vessel spent over two hours maneuvering through dense ice fields while traversing the route via Margaret Bay, situated on the western edge of the Antarctic Peninsula. The 'Noosphere' traveled approximately 300 kilometers south of Ukraine's established Vernadsky Research Base, which is located north of the Polar Circle.

Rothera Station, positioned on Adelaide Island, serves as the United Kingdom's principal scientific facility in the Antarctic region. During the austral summer months, this base accommodates up to one hundred specialists, though that number contracts to just 22 individuals during the winter period. The successful resupply and personnel rotation operation at Rothera was made possible by deepening international collaboration, a central theme of the current expedition.

Furthermore, the 'Noosphere' is actively engaged in joint scientific endeavors this season alongside partners from Mexico and Colombia. A primary focus of these collaborative programs is the investigation of warming trends within the Southern Ocean. Specifically, oceanographers are studying 'marine heatwaves'—anomalous warming events driven by global climate change, which are now manifesting even in the frigid Antarctic waters. In parallel, geologists, working with their Mexican counterparts, utilized a multi-corer device to extract deep seabed sediments. This material will be invaluable for reconstructing paleoclimatic conditions spanning the last several hundred to thousands of years.

For more precise data collection, temperature, salinity, oxygen levels, and acidity were measured at 12 distinct locations across the Southern Ocean using a CTD probe. This comprehensive data set contributes significantly to climate modeling efforts.

Although geopolitical realities currently necessitate the vessel's operational base being established in Cape Town, South Africa, the scientific output has not only been maintained but is actively expanding. This fifth voyage of the 'Noosphere' is shaping up to be record-breaking in terms of the volume of research conducted and the breadth of international partnerships forged, thereby solidifying Ukraine's standing in global polar science. Following its successful call at Rothera, the icebreaker commenced its return transit toward the Vernadsky Station, continuing its data acquisition along the planned route.

Research conducted in the Southern Ocean carries immense global significance. This vast region plays a crucial role in mitigating planetary warming by absorbing roughly 40% of all anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions. The ongoing mission of the 'Noosphere' directly contributes vital knowledge toward understanding these complex, planet-scale climatic processes.
