Security Alert at Berlin-Brandenburg Airport: Flight Operations Halted by Unidentified Aerial Object
Edited by: Uliana Soloveva
On the evening of Wednesday, March 11, 2026, Berlin-Brandenburg International Airport (BER) was forced to implement an immediate suspension of all takeoff and landing activities. This precautionary security measure was triggered by the sighting of an unidentified aerial object within the airport's restricted airspace. The disruption commenced at approximately 19:00 local time, bringing one of Germany's primary aviation hubs to a standstill for roughly thirty minutes as authorities assessed the potential risk and ensured the safety of passengers and crew.
According to airport officials, the mysterious object was visually detected in the immediate vicinity of a helicopter hangar utilized by the Bundeswehr, the German Armed Forces. German police units were promptly dispatched to investigate the intrusion and identify the craft. However, the object vanished from sight and could not be tracked or identified by the responding officers. Following a thorough security sweep of the premises, flight restrictions were lifted shortly after 19:10 local time (18:10 GMT), allowing air traffic to resume its normal schedule, though some residual delays were expected to affect the flight board throughout the night.
This latest disruption is part of a troubling trend involving unauthorized drone flights over critical European infrastructure. Friedrich Merz, who assumed the office of German Federal Chancellor in May 2025, has previously voiced concerns regarding the origin of these incursions. Merz has suggested that Moscow may be responsible for the majority of recent drone activities targeting sensitive sites across Germany and the wider European continent. For its part, the Kremlin has consistently dismissed such allegations, labeling them as entirely groundless and politically motivated.
In response to the escalating frequency of these security breaches, Germany enacted new legislation in October 2025. This law grants police the authority to use firearms to neutralize drones under circumstances involving an "acute threat or serious harm." Data from the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) underscores the systemic nature of the challenge; since the beginning of 2025, the agency has documented more than one thousand instances of suspicious drone flights. These incidents have predominantly occurred near military installations, international airports, and vital energy infrastructure, representing a significant increase compared to the previous year's statistics and highlighting a persistent vulnerability in national security.
Berlin-Brandenburg Airport has faced similar challenges in the recent past, including a substantial two-hour shutdown on October 31, 2025, and another closure on November 1, 2025, both of which necessitated the diversion of numerous flights. During the Munich Security Conference in February 2026, Chancellor Merz emphasized the urgent need for Europe to bolster its military and defensive capabilities in the face of hybrid threats. The thirty-minute incident on March 11 serves as a stark reminder that securing national airspace remains a top priority for German authorities throughout 2026.
