US Forces Seize Two Russian 'Shadow Fleet' Tankers in Separate Operations

United States military personnel have successfully taken control of two vessels suspected of being part of Russia's clandestine 'shadow fleet.' This action underscores a significant enforcement effort against illicit maritime activities.

On Wednesday, January 7th, the U.S. Southern Command announced the seizure of the tanker M/T Sophia in international waters within the Caribbean Sea. According to the official statement, this vessel was operating without a flag and was engaged in what the U.S. authorities deemed 'illegal activity.'

Earlier that same day, another tanker, the Marinera (formerly known as Bella 1), was intercepted in the North Atlantic, situated between the British Isles and Iceland. The European Command of the U.S. Armed Forces (EUCOM) confirmed that the seizure was executed based on a warrant issued by a U.S. federal court. The vessel was sailing under the Russian flag at the time of apprehension. Allegations against the Marinera include the transportation of sanctioned oil originating from both Venezuela and Iran, as well as actively attempting to evade inspection by the U.S. Coast Guard.

These coordinated operations effectively demonstrated the immediate implementation of a newly established policy regarding maritime enforcement. The swiftness of the seizures highlights a proactive stance by U.S. authorities.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated that the M/T Sophia was officially deemed 'stateless' after it was discovered to have been employing a 'false flag.' The capture operation involved the participation of U.S. Navy SEALs and was carried out under the authority of a U.S. federal court order. Furthermore, the United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence confirmed that it provided necessary logistical support for the mission.

The Pentagon issued a statement emphasizing the commitment of Operation Southern Spear. They asserted that they are 'steadfastly pursuing our mission to interdict illicit activities within the Western Hemisphere' and pledged to 'defend our homeland and restore security and strength across the American sphere.'

The detention of the Marinera prompted a sharp rebuke from Moscow. Russia officially protested the action, characterizing it as a violation of established maritime law. Their argument referenced the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, a treaty which the United States has notably not ratified. Russia's Ministry of Transport contended that the vessel had been granted temporary authorization to sail under the Russian flag, effective since December 24th.
