Journalist Gaspar Hernàndez Explores Consciousness Beyond the Physical Brain
Edited by: Olga Samsonova
Catalan journalist, literary critic, and writer Gaspar Hernàndez has released his latest volume, El camino de la consciencia, marking a shift in his career focus toward disseminating complex concepts in spirituality and psychology. Hernàndez, known for hosting the Catalunya Ràdio program L'ofici de viure for two decades, applies his established media rigor to this subject, building on his prior work, which includes winning the Premi Josep Pla in 2009 for his novel El silencio.
The new publication challenges the prevailing materialist view by proposing that the physical brain functions primarily as a receiver, rather than the originator, of consciousness, which the author posits exists independently of the body. Hernàndez substantiates this central thesis through extensive research, incorporating dialogues with spiritual mentors, various scientists, and individuals reporting near-death experiences (NDEs). These accounts collectively suggest that the core essence of consciousness maintains continuity following physical cessation, a concept that directly confronts the societal perception of mortality as an absolute end point.
Hernàndez's fundamental argument posits that genuine happiness is an intrinsic state accessible by consciously re-establishing connection with this fundamental consciousness. This innate state is frequently obscured by layers of social conditioning and the persistent, involuntary stream of thought characteristic of the active mind. To facilitate this reconnection, the author advocates for a process of 'unlearning' mental mechanisms that create blockages, identifying compulsive rational thinking as a primary impediment to inner clarity.
To achieve this state of non-attachment, Hernàndez prescribes specific contemplative practices, notably meditation, to quiet mental activity. The recommended technique involves focusing attention on the present moment and observing the subtle space between successive thoughts. This practice is intended to enable the individual to examine the nature of their perceived self, moving beyond the ego-driven narrative. Furthermore, the narrative underscores the indispensable role of authentic interpersonal connections, linking the pursuit of spiritual realization directly to the cultivation of joy and affection as vital components of a fulfilled existence.
