Gaspar Hernández's New Book Proposes Consciousness as Independent of the Brain

Journalist and author Gaspar Hernández, recipient of the 2009 Josep Pla Prize for his novel El silenci and the Ciutat de Barcelona Prize for his work on Catalunya Ràdio, has shifted his focus with his latest publication, El camino de la consciencia (or El camí de la consciència in Catalan). Published by RBA in 2026, the book marks a significant career transition toward disseminating deeper spiritual and psychological understanding.
The central thesis of Hernández's work posits a fundamental shift in understanding: that the brain functions primarily as a receiver, rather than the main producer, of consciousness. This perspective frames consciousness as an entity that exists beyond the physical confines of the body. This view is supported by an in-depth exploration of testimonies from prominent spiritual teachers and, more significantly, data derived from Near-Death Experiences (NDEs).
Studies on NDEs frequently indicate periods of clear consciousness even after cardiac function has ceased. Some cases report measurable brain electrical activity up to one hour post-cardiac arrest, challenging the assumption of irreversible damage within the typical ten-minute window following circulatory cessation. Hernández argues that true happiness is intrinsic, accessible by reconnecting with this core consciousness, which is often obscured by compulsive thought patterns and continuous social adaptation.
In a broader psychological context, while consciousness is generally defined as the state of being aware of an experience, much psychic activity, as suggested by perspectives like Freud's, occurs in the subconscious, influencing behavior without direct awareness. To achieve this reconnection, Hernández contends that individuals must consciously engage in 'unlearning'—releasing mental barriers, particularly compulsive rational thought processes.
To facilitate the release of these mental obstacles, the author recommends structured meditation practices. These techniques aim to quiet the internal monologue, anchor focus in the present moment, and specifically observe the 'space between thoughts' as a pathway to questioning and discovering one's authentic self. Phenomenological research on NDEs further supports that these experiences often catalyze lasting positive shifts in attitude and behavior, irrespective of the subject's religious background.
Interestingly, while the primary emphasis lies on internal exploration and self-awareness, Hernández’s work underscores the critical role of interpersonal relationships. He connects this discovered spirituality with an increase in joy and affection that transcends conventional religious frameworks. This authentic self-discovery contrasts with strategies of constant presence that can lead to audience desensitization, where the brain activates defensive mechanisms against information overload. Thus, the pursuit of genuine consciousness advocated by Hernández offers a path toward sincere connection, both internally and externally.
