De succesvolle lancering van de SpaceX Crew-12-missie op vrijdag 13 februari 2026 heeft de menselijke aanwezigheid op het Internationale Ruimtestation (ISS) verstevigd. Deze missie vervoerde een internationale bemanning van vier personen met als primair doel de bezetting van het station te herstellen van drie naar de gebruikelijke zeven bemanningsleden. Deze aanvulling was noodzakelijk na de onverwachte en vroegtijdige terugkeer van de Crew-11-bemanning in januari 2026, de eerste medische evacuatie in de 26-jarige geschiedenis van het ISS.

Crew-12, de 13e SpaceX-missie om astronauten naar het ISS te brengen, is gelanceerd!

De lancering vond plaats om 5:15 uur EST (10:15 GMT) vanaf Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) op Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. Na eerdere vertragingen door ongunstige weersomstandigheden, met name hoge windsnelheden, bracht de Crew Dragon-capsule, genaamd 'Freedom', de astronauten naar hun bestemming. De Falcon 9-booster landde succesvol op Landing Zone 40 (LZ-40), wat de operationele volwassenheid van het Commercial Crew Programma aantoont.

De Crew-12-bemanning benadrukt de mondiale samenwerking in de ruimtevaart. Het team staat onder leiding van NASA-astronaut Jessica Meir als Commandant, met NASA-piloot Jack Hathaway. Missiespecialist 1 is ESA-astronaut Sophie Adenot en Missiespecialist 2 is Roscosmos-kosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev. De missieperiode is geprojecteerd op acht tot negen maanden, wat mogelijk wijst op een aanpassing in de frequentie van NASA's ISS-programma. Meir heeft eerdere ervaring, onder meer met een volledig vrouwelijke ruimtewandeling in 2019, terwijl Fedyaev vloog met Crew-6 in 2023. De integratie van ervaren vliegers en nieuwkomers zoals Adenot, met expertise in engineering, onderstreept de diverse vaardigheden aan boord.

During today's EVA, the crew will install a mod kit for the first of a pair of IROSA (Roll Out Solar Arrays), which will arrive later this year. Today's EVA will prepare the 2A power channel, with EVA 95 preparing the 3B channel.
