A phased restoration of international airline operations is currently underway within Qatari airspace as foreign carriers begin to return following a temporary closure initiated by regional geopolitical tensions. This development marks a significant milestone in the recovery of the nation's aviation sector and the strengthening of its global transportation links.
The Qatar Civil Aviation Authority (QCAA) issued a formal statement on Monday, originally released in English, announcing the gradual relaunch of services by foreign companies at Hamad International Airport (HIA) in Doha. This strategic move is regarded as a vital component in restoring the country's connectivity with the international aviation community and facilitating global travel.
The decision to permit the return of international carriers was reached after a meticulous assessment of the regional situation, conducted in close collaboration with national authorities. This comprehensive review was designed to ensure that the aviation infrastructure is fully prepared to handle the resumption of traffic with maximum efficiency and readiness.
The QCAA emphasized that all flight operations will be carried out in strict accordance with established international safety standards. A complete suite of safety and security measures has been implemented to provide the highest level of protection for all passengers and flight crews operating within the jurisdiction.
This full resumption follows an earlier phase in March, during which the QCAA introduced a partial restoration of navigation services. At that time, operations were maintained at minimum capacity and were primarily dedicated to essential services such as evacuation flights, repatriation missions, and the transport of critical cargo.
During that initial period, Qatar Airways maintained operations via a specific humanitarian corridor. On March 7, the first flights from Hamad International Airport were directed toward major European hubs, including London Heathrow, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Madrid, Rome, and Frankfurt, with priority seating reserved for passengers previously affected by travel disruptions.
The latest announcement from the QCAA coincides with a significant expansion of the Qatar Airways network. Between June 16 and September 15, the national carrier is scheduled to operate across more than 150 routes, introducing new lines and increasing flight frequencies to Doha to provide broader global coverage during the peak summer travel season.
The airline's extensive summer network includes 44 cities in Europe, such as Baku, Copenhagen, Milan, Tbilisi, Vienna, and Warsaw. In Africa, the carrier serves 25 destinations ranging from Abuja and Algiers to Cape Town and Dar es Salaam, while also maintaining 24 routes in the Middle East, 46 in Asia, 14 in the Americas, and 6 in Oceania.
Reflecting on the airport's capacity, Hamad International Airport recorded a total of 282,975 takeoffs and landings in 2025. During that year, the airport's total passenger traffic reached 54.3 million people, with the month of August setting a historic record by processing more than 5 million travelers.
As global carriers reintegrate into the local aviation landscape, the QCAA and Hamad International Airport continue to prioritize operational excellence.
