Emma Heming Willis, wife of actor Bruce Willis, has shared a poignant update on her husband's health, detailing the significant progression of his language impairments due to frontotemporal dementia (FTD).

Willis, who was diagnosed with FTD in February 2023, is facing increasing challenges with communication. Emma has stated, "The language is going, and we’ve learned to adapt," underscoring the family's efforts to navigate these changes. Frontotemporal dementia is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain, areas crucial for behavior, personality, and language. FTD is the most common form of dementia for individuals under 60, typically striking between the ages of 45 and 65, though onset can vary.

The progression of FTD is unique to each person, but it invariably leads to a decline in cognitive and functional abilities. Early symptoms can be subtle and sometimes mistaken for changes in mood or personality, making diagnosis challenging, with an average of 3.6 years passing before an accurate diagnosis is reached. Emma Heming Willis has previously spoken about the initial signs of her husband's condition, noting a shift from his typically talkative and engaged demeanor to a more quiet presence.

The family's commitment to raising awareness for FTD continues, aiming to foster greater understanding and support for those affected by the condition. In August 2025, the family made the difficult decision to relocate Willis to a more manageable home environment, ensuring he remains close to his dedicated caretakers. Support for individuals and families impacted by FTD is available through various organizations, including The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration (AFTD), which offers resources, a helpline, educational events, and support groups. Other organizations like CurePSP and the Brain Support Network also provide valuable assistance and community connections for those facing FTD and related neurodegenerative disorders.
