The Meiteilon-language feature "Boong" has etched its name into the annals of cinematic history by securing a monumental win at the 2026 British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards. Taking home the prize for "Best Children’s and Family Film," the production represents the first time an Indian film has triumphed in this specific category. This particular award was introduced by BAFTA in 2025, designed to honor films that resonate across multiple generations, offering meaningful narratives for children, youth, and adults alike.
Directed by Lakshmipriya Devi and produced by the trio of Excel Entertainment, Chalkboard Entertainment, and Suitable Pictures, "Boong" serves as Devi’s impressive directorial debut. Before stepping into the director's chair, she built a solid reputation as a first assistant director on high-profile films like "Luck by Chance," "Talaash," and "PK." Devi personally accepted the honor during the awards ceremony in London on February 22, 2026. In her acceptance speech, she spoke candidly about the persistent tensions in her native Manipur, expressing a fervent hope for the return of peace. She characterized the film as a tribute to her homeland, a region she described as being frequently marginalized and underrepresented in India.
At its heart, "Boong" is a poignant coming-of-age story following a young student who resides with his mother, Mandakini (portrayed by Bala Hijam), after the unexplained disappearance of his father, Joykumar. In a quest to provide his mother with the "ultimate gift," the boy and his companion Raju (Ang Sanamatum) embark on a dangerous expedition to the border town of Moreh, located on the frontier with Myanmar, in search of his missing parent. The film also stars Gugun Kipgen as Broendro, the character nicknamed Boong. The storyline is set against a complex social environment, subtly addressing racial friction and the hardships inherent to life in the border regions of Manipur.
The victory is particularly notable given the high caliber of international nominees "Boong" surpassed, including high-profile projects such as "Zootropolis 2," "Lilo & Stitch," and the French sci-fi film "Arco." The movie's path to international success began on September 5, 2024, when it premiered in the Discovery section of the 49th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), making it the first Manipuri feature to ever be selected for the festival. It subsequently appeared at the Mumbai Film Festival (MAMI) and the International Film Festival of India before its general release in Indian theaters on September 19, 2025. This prestigious BAFTA recognition highlights the expanding footprint of Indian regional cinema on the global awards circuit.
