Drew Goddard Confirms Work on New "Matrix" Film

Filmmaker Drew Goddard has officially confirmed that the script for the next installment in "The Matrix" universe is currently in active development. This project will mark the first time in the franchise's history that the writing and directing duties will not be handled directly by the Wachowskis, although Lana Wachowski is set to serve as an executive producer on the new film.

Goddard, an Academy Award nominee for his "The Martian" screenplay and the director of "The Cabin in the Woods," described the opportunity to work on "The Matrix" as an idea he simply couldn't turn down. Warner Bros. Motion Pictures President of Production Jesse Ehrman stated that Goddard presented a "new idea that will be a way to continue the world of ‘The Matrix’ while honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective."

The project follows the fourth film, "The Matrix Resurrections," which was released on December 22, 2021. That film, directed by Lana Wachowski without her sister's involvement, grossed approximately $159.2 million against a $190 million budget, falling short of the studio's commercial expectations—a result partly attributed to its hybrid release during the COVID-19 pandemic. Goddard, for his part, praised "Resurrections," calling it the most emotional entry in the series.

The current phase of development is focused on building the narrative foundation, signaling steady progress toward the next chapter of this sci-fi epic. Goddard, who is also producing the project through his Goddard Textiles banner alongside Sarah Esberg, emphasized that he takes the responsibility "very seriously," aiming to preserve the continuity of the ideas established by the Wachowskis.

Fan expectations regarding the return of key cast members, specifically Keanu Reeves (Neo) and Carrie-Anne Moss (Trinity), remain high, though Goddard is refraining from providing specific casting details. While exact plot points are being kept under wraps, it is suggested that the film may not be a direct sequel but rather a new work set within the broader "Matrix" universe. The original 1999 film, directed by the Wachowskis, became a cultural touchstone, earning $467 million on a $63 million budget and winning four Academy Awards for its technical achievements.
