Historical Epic 'The King's Warden' Dominates South Korean Box Office, Igniting a Tourism Surge in Yeongwol

The historical masterpiece "The King's Warden" has officially cemented its place as South Korea's premier cinematic event of 2026. Since its theatrical release on February 4, 2026, the film has shattered records by surpassing 11 million ticket sales domestically. This milestone marks the first time in two years that a production has crossed the prestigious 10-million-viewer threshold, a feat often compared to a Hollywood blockbuster reaching the one-billion-dollar mark. The project was helmed by director Jang Hang-jun, whose previous credits include the 2002 hit "Break Out" and the 2023 film "Rebound."

Produced through a collaboration between Onda Works and B.A. Entertainment and distributed by Showbox, the narrative delves into the poignant life of King Danjong, a 15th-century monarch who was stripped of his throne. The story specifically focuses on his 1457 exile, portrayed through the perspective of a local village head who provided him with shelter. The cast is led by the versatile Yoo Hae-jin, who portrays the village head, and Park Ji-hoon, a member of the boy band Wanna One, who delivers a compelling performance as the young king. Their on-screen chemistry and individual performances have garnered significant praise from film critics nationwide.

The film's massive commercial success has translated into a tangible economic boost for Yeongwol County in Gangwon Province, a region historically tied to King Danjong’s period of exile. Local heritage sites have reported unprecedented visitor numbers; between January 1 and March 8, 2026, the combined attendance at Cheongnyeongpo—the actual site of the King's exile—and the Jangneung Royal Tomb exceeded 111,128 people. To put this into perspective, it took until June of the previous year to reach the 100,000-visitor mark. Cheongnyeongpo, a picturesque peninsula nearly isolated by a river, has become a primary destination alongside Jangneung, which has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2009.

Beyond the box office and tourism sectors, "The King's Warden" has sparked a broader cultural revival. According to data from the Kyobo Bookstore, sales of historical literature related to the "Annals of the Joseon Dynasty" have tripled since the film's premiere compared to the preceding period. This cultural phenomenon even caught the attention of President Lee Jae-myung, who publicly lauded the film’s success. The President noted the significance of achieving a 10-million-viewer record after a two-year drought, describing it as a "valuable result born from the exceptional imagination of filmmakers, the power of storytelling, and the generous support of the public." He further committed the government to fostering a more robust creative ecosystem.

Director Jang Hang-jun expressed his sincere gratitude for the public's response, admitting that the scale of the film's success exceeded his expectations. In anticipation of the 59th Danjong Culture Festival, which is set to take place in Yeongwol from April 24 to April 26, the director confirmed his participation, including a scheduled lecture. Actor Park Ji-hoon has also been active in promoting the festival through Yeongwol’s official social media channels, drawing further attention to the regional celebration.

Historical consultant Kim Sung-nam from Korea University observed that the film’s central themes—specifically the legitimacy of political coups—resonate deeply with contemporary audiences. This connection is particularly poignant following the national events of December 2024 regarding the declaration of martial law. Ultimately, "The King's Warden" has functioned as more than just entertainment; it has become a catalyst for re-examining national history while simultaneously driving regional economic development and cultural pride.
