From Baoli to Futurism: The Architectural Evolution of Prestige University in Indore

The Prestige University campus in Indore, India, stands as a landmark achievement for Sanjay Puri Architects, representing a sophisticated fusion of ancient Indian architectural heritage and cutting-edge environmental sustainability. Completed in January 2026, this innovative educational complex has emerged as a premier global example of climate-responsive design, specifically engineered to withstand the challenging thermal conditions of its geographic region.

The fundamental design concept draws direct inspiration from the "baoli," or traditional Indian stepwells, which were historically essential to the arid landscapes of Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Delhi. These ancient structures, often descending 20 to 30 meters into the earth to reach groundwater, were characterized by intricate stone stairways and subterranean galleries. Between the 2nd and 19th centuries, baoli evolved beyond mere water reservoirs to become ornate social hubs, offering cool retreats for religious rituals, community gatherings, and public assembly during the hottest months of the year.

Occupying a sprawling 32-acre (13-hectare) site, the university building encompasses a total floor area of 30,843 square meters and rises through five distinct levels to a maximum height of 28 meters. The architects employed a distinctive stepped geometry that ascends diagonally from north to south, a move that visually breaks down the building's massive scale while creating a series of "floating" green terraces. The most striking feature is the roof, which has been transformed into a massive open-air amphitheater comprising 463 individual platforms across a 9,000-square-meter expanse, serving as a primary venue for lectures and social interaction.

The interior of the complex is a masterclass in functional integration, housing administrative offices, lecture halls, seminar rooms, a comprehensive library, and a cafeteria. These internal spaces are punctuated by open-air courtyards filled with lush landscaping, which serve the dual purpose of providing natural northern light and facilitating cross-ventilation. This north-south orientation is a strategic response to the local climate, where temperatures consistently range between 30°C and 40°C for eight months of the year; the shaded terraces and courtyards drastically reduce the need for energy-intensive air conditioning and artificial illumination.

The project's architectural significance was recognized early in its development when it was named a finalist at the World Architecture Festival in 2019. The design perfectly encapsulates the core philosophy of Sanjay Puri Architects, which emphasizes the seamless integration of the natural landscape into the built environment to achieve superior energy efficiency.
