Zagreb’s Architectural Heritage Transformed by the Eighth Annual Festival of Light
Edited by: Ek Soshnikova
From March 18 to March 22, 2026, the eighth edition of the Zagreb Festival of Light once again reimagined the Croatian capital’s urban landscape. This annual event, which has been a staple of the city's cultural calendar since 2017, effectively turned streets, squares, and historic facades into a sprawling open-air gallery. By merging cutting-edge technology with creative vision, the festival serves as a vibrant celebration of spring's arrival, highlighting the immense potential of light as a sophisticated artistic medium.
The 2026 program featured an impressive array of 26 distinct light installations distributed across 21 strategic locations throughout the city. This extensive layout fostered a unique dialogue between contemporary artistic interpretations and Zagreb’s rich historical architecture. Visitors were invited to explore the city in a new light, witnessing how digital and luminous art can breathe fresh life into centuries-old structures while maintaining their cultural integrity and historical significance.
The festival's growing international prestige was further solidified by its inclusion in the prestigious lists of Europe’s top events for 2026 by both Forbes and European Best Destinations. This global recognition underscores the high quality of the curated works and the event's significance on the world stage. The 2026 lineup was particularly diverse, featuring contributions from ten international artists and collectives hailing from the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Slovakia, and Spain, who worked alongside talented local Croatian creators.
Beyond mere spectacle, the integration of light art into the urban fabric encourages residents and visitors alike to reconsider the built environment. By transforming everyday spaces into interactive zones, the festival stimulates a deeper public engagement with the city’s architecture. This artistic intervention allows for a creative re-evaluation of urban spaces, demonstrating how they can be utilized to foster community spirit and cultural appreciation through innovative design and visual storytelling.
Both the Lower Town and the Upper Town were revitalized by these installations, becoming a grand stage where architecture and illumination performed in harmony after sunset. The Zagreb Festival of Light has become a crucial instrument in positioning the city as a premier year-round tourist destination. This successful symbiosis of art, design, and technology created a festive atmosphere that perfectly captured the joyous spirit of the season, leaving a lasting impression on a diverse and enthusiastic audience.
