Phu Tho Provincial Police Conduct Hands-On Traffic Safety Training for High School Students
Edited by: Olga Samsonova
Coordinated educational initiatives are currently underway in Vietnam's Phu Tho province, specifically targeting younger demographics to curb traffic violations. These proactive measures align with nationwide efforts to enhance road safety, especially given the sobering statistics: between December 15 and May 14 across Vietnam, a total of 7,853 traffic accidents were officially recorded.
A significant milestone in these efforts occurred on December 1, 2025, when the Phu Tho Provincial Traffic Police, in partnership with the Tam Nong Secondary School administration, hosted a specialized safety seminar. This session catered to nearly 450 tenth-grade students. The urgency behind this training is clear: since the start of 2025, the province documented over 6,800 instances of traffic law infringement involving students, highlighting a notable trend of minors operating motorized vehicles.
The curriculum delved into crucial legal frameworks, clarifying the minimum age requirements for operating motorcycles and electric bicycles, alongside the mandatory use of protective helmets. Furthermore, the training emphasized practical operational skills. Students received instruction on throttle modulation, proper braking techniques, and gear shifting procedures. This comprehensive approach echoes the nation's sustained commitment to educational safety measures, exemplified by the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training’s pilot project, “Traffic Safety for Tomorrow’s Smiles,” which began during the 2017-2018 academic year.
A central feature of the day was a practical simulation conducted on a specially prepared track. Here, students actively practiced essential maneuvers, including navigating figure-eight patterns and safely traversing simulated road obstacles. Upon successful completion of the course, participants were awarded official certificates issued by the Department of Traffic Police. This local focus contributes to a broader national trend: during the first ten months of 2025, Vietnam saw an overall 22.7% reduction in traffic accidents compared to the figures from 2024, a positive shift partially attributable to intensified educational outreach.
Concurrently, at Ngoc Lap Secondary School, a separate initiative focused on fostering personal accountability was launched around November 20, 2025, coinciding with Teacher’s Day celebrations. This school introduced a voluntary program where students could affix identification tags to their electric bicycles. This local drive saw strong participation, with 394 out of 561 enrolled students voluntarily tagging their vehicles. These localized actions, combined with broader provincial and national projects, aim squarely at minimizing traffic incidents in 2025, prioritizing the high-risk youth demographic—a key strategic focus for the Phu Tho Provincial Department of Traffic Police.
The overall strategy employs a multi-layered prevention system. By integrating rigorous, hands-on skill drills, as seen in Tam Nong, with focused efforts to boost individual responsibility, as demonstrated in Ngoc Lap, the province is building a robust framework. This integrated methodology directly supports Vietnam's overarching goal of cultivating a significantly safer road environment for its rising generation.
