世界気象機関（WMO）は、2017年10月に米国で発生した稲妻が829キロメートルに及ぶ長さを持つとして、史上最長の稲妻として公式に認定しました。
この稲妻は、テキサス州東部からカンザス州カンザスシティ近郊までの広範囲にわたり、東京から広島までの距離に匹敵します。
WMOのサウロ事務局長は、「雷は毎年、世界中で多くの死者を出している」と指摘し、長距離にわたる稲妻の発生が安全対策の重要性を再認識させると述べました。
この記録は、最新の衛星技術を用いた再調査により明らかになりました。
稲妻は、雲内での電荷の蓄積と放電によって発生し、雷雲の規模や大気の状態によってその長さや持続時間が変化します。
WMOは、稲妻の観測技術の進歩により、今後さらに大規模な稲妻の記録が明らかになる可能性があるとしています。
