Abu Dhabi Accelerates Level 4 Autonomous Taxi Services with Commercial Expansion on Yas Island
Edited by: Tatyana Hurynovich
The Integrated Transport Center (ITC), an affiliate of Abu Dhabi’s Department of Municipalities and Transport, has officially announced the commercial expansion of Level 4 autonomous taxi services across Yas Island. This milestone, reached on March 13, 2026, represents a pivotal shift from experimental trials to a fully operational commercial model. This development is a core component of the Emirate’s broader strategy to scale autonomous mobility, overseen by the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council to ensure a robust regulatory framework for these advanced technologies.
A major highlight of this expansion is the introduction of a second service provider. Autogo, a subsidiary of the local firm K2, has joined the existing operator Apollo Go, which is a branch of the Chinese tech giant Baidu. By integrating a second operator, the ITC aims to foster healthy market competition and enhance the overall resilience of the region's autonomous vehicle ecosystem. The authorities anticipate that the fleet will grow to include several hundred vehicles by the end of 2026, establishing it as the most extensive fully driverless ride-hailing network in Abu Dhabi. Residents and visitors can now access these services through the AutoGo mobile application, which is available for both Apple and Android users.
To mark the initial phase of commercialization, K2’s Vice President of Strategy, Waleed Albloushi, announced that the company would initially offer complimentary rides to the public. Albloushi emphasized that this initiative is designed to help the community experience autonomous mobility as a viable and practical solution for their daily transportation needs, creating a solid foundation for future commercial growth. Supporting this vision, Hamad Adel Al-Afifi, the Executive Director of the Intelligent Transport Systems Sector at the ITC, noted that the inclusion of Autogo reinforces Abu Dhabi's status as a global leader in high-tech innovation. He further stated that the current regulatory and operational frameworks are fully prepared to support Level 4 driverless vehicles while maintaining the highest possible safety standards.
This expansion aligns perfectly with the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Transportation Strategy 2040 (AT Vision 2040), which targets a future where 25% of all domestic trips are conducted via smart, automated transport systems. While the current focus remains on Yas Island—a premier leisure and entertainment hub—the ITC plans to gradually roll out these services to other key areas, including Al Reem Island, Al Maryah Island, and Saadiyat Island. This progression follows a successful partnership between K2’s Autogo and Baidu’s Apollo Go that began in March 2025.
Having secured one of the first commercial permits for fully driverless operations in November 2025, the partners are now working toward the long-term objectives of AT Vision 2040. These goals include a significant 15% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions and an 18% decrease in traffic-related accidents by the year 2040. By systematically expanding the autonomous fleet and geographic reach, Abu Dhabi is setting a global benchmark for sustainable and safe urban mobility.
