Department of Government Efficiency Dissolves Amid Foreign Influence Network Exposure
Edited by: Tatyana Hurynovich
The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a high-profile initiative under President Donald Trump's second term spearheaded by Elon Musk, has officially ceased operations, concluding its mandate eight months ahead of its scheduled termination in July 2026. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Director Scott Kupor confirmed in November 2025 that DOGE was no longer a centralized federal entity, with its remaining functions reportedly being integrated into the OPM, the government's human resources office. The agency was established by executive order on January 20, 2025, with a core mission focused on modernizing information technology, maximizing federal productivity, and aggressively reducing regulations and spending.
DOGE claimed savings exceeding $205 billion, though independent analyses presented a contrasting fiscal picture. The Partnership for Public Service (PSP) estimated that the agency's cost-cutting measures, factoring in expenses like paid leave and lost productivity, could ultimately cost taxpayers $135 billion for the fiscal year. Elon Musk, serving as a special government employee, departed the agency in May 2025 following a public dispute with President Trump regarding the "Big Beautiful Bill" legislation. The agency's tenure was marked by significant administrative upheaval, including its operations overlapping with the United States' longest government shutdown, which ran from October 1 to November 12, 2025.
The operational impact of DOGE's actions has drawn severe scrutiny, particularly concerning its cuts to foreign aid programs. As of November 2025, estimates from a Boston University epidemiologist linked these reductions to over 600,000 deaths, a consequence attributed to the effective shutdown of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in July 2025. Concurrently, two senior DOGE employees, including Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia, transitioned in August 2025 to the newly established National Design Studio, an entity tasked with redesigning government websites.
The dissolution of DOGE coincided with a major development on the digital information front. In November 2025, X (formerly Twitter) rolled out a transparency feature designed to display the country of origin for user accounts, a measure intended to combat misinformation and foreign interference. This feature immediately flagged domestic political accounts promoting narratives such as 'America First' or MAGA, tracing their origins to foreign nations. Nikita Bier, X's Head of Product, confirmed the limited rollout began around November 21, 2025. Specific examples included the account 'America First,' with over 60,000 followers, linked to Bangladesh, and '1776General,' identified as operating from Turkey. The platform allows users to opt for a broader region or continent instead of a specific country, acknowledging potential inaccuracies due to VPN usage.
