Apple commenced a series of product rollouts on Monday, March 2, 2026, with central media hands-on sessions scheduled for Wednesday, March 4, in global centers including New York, London, and Shanghai. A central element of this launch strategy is the introduction of a new, more accessible laptop, reportedly named the MacBook Neo, specifically engineered to gain significant share within the budget-conscious education sector. This strategic move directly challenges the established dominance of competitors like Chromebooks, which secured 60.1% of the global education device market share in 2025.

The entry-level MacBook Neo is positioned as a direct competitor to Chromebooks, targeting students and institutions where price sensitivity dictates purchasing decisions. Analysts project a starting price between $599 and $799, substantially undercutting the $999 starting price of the current MacBook Air. This pricing structure is supported by utilizing the A18 Pro mobile platform chip, rather than the M-series processors found in higher-tier MacBooks. The A18 Pro, first featured in the iPhone 16 series in 2024, employs a 6-core CPU configuration, offering single-core performance benchmarks around 3451, which surpasses the older M1 chip's score of approximately 2369.

To achieve this entry-level cost, the device incorporates several architectural compromises. The base configuration is anticipated to include 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, and it will run macOS Tahoe with Apple Intelligence capabilities. Premium features reportedly omitted include True Tone display technology and potentially a non-backlit keyboard, alongside USB-C ports that may not support Thunderbolt technology. The design maintains an aluminum chassis, with an expected display size between 12.9 and 13 inches, potentially echoing the compact 12-inch MacBook lineage. The new model features a 13-inch Liquid Retina display with 500 nits brightness and is offered in colors including blush, indigo, silver, and citrus.

The educational sector represented 57.70% of the Chromebook market size, which reached $14.7 billion in 2025. By setting the MacBook Neo's starting price at $599, with education pricing potentially reaching as low as $499, Apple undercuts the cost of an iPad bundled with a Magic Keyboard, which totals approximately $549 for students. This launch is part of a broader 'Big Week' strategy that also encompasses the iPhone 17e and M5-upgraded MacBook Air models. The new MacBook Neo is available for immediate pre-order, with shipments beginning Wednesday, March 11, 2026. The device is constructed with 60 percent recycled materials, reflecting an environmental consideration in its production.
