A 360° camera in the heart of ice: GreenDrill drilling reads Greenland's memory and the future of the climate.

A significant piece of evidence emerged from the scientific community in late 2025 or early 2026, originating from northwestern Greenland. Data gathered through the GreenDrill project strongly indicated that the Prudhoe Dome ice sheet completely vanished approximately 7,000 to 8,200 years ago, during the Early Holocene period. These groundbreaking findings were subsequently published in the journal Nature Geoscience.

The research team, a collaboration between the University at Buffalo and Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, conducted an expedition in 2023. During this mission, they successfully drilled through the ice down to the bedrock. The drilling reached depths spanning roughly 509 to 516 meters. Utilizing specialized drilling apparatus, they extracted sediment and bedrock core samples from beneath the ice mass.

A crucial analytical technique employed in this study was luminescence dating. This method relies on the principle that minerals retain a 'memory' of the last time they were exposed to sunlight. The analysis of these samples revealed that the underlying ground had been open to light sometime between 6,000 and 8,200 years ago. This timeline confirms that the ice cover in that specific area had indeed disappeared entirely during that epoch.

Why This Discovery Matters Now

The warming experienced in that region during that past period is estimated to have been around 3 to 5 degrees Celsius warmer than preceding colder eras. This historical temperature fluctuation is strikingly comparable to the projections models currently suggest for the end of the 21st century under continued anthropogenic warming trends. In essence, what happened in the past is now becoming a plausible scenario for our near future.

Implications for Global Sea Levels

Based on these findings, related estimates suggest that such a retreat of the vulnerable northern sectors of the ice sheet could have contributed between 0.19 and 0.73 meters to the global sea level. This range is contingent upon the specific climate scenarios and modeling approaches utilized for the calculation.

What This Adds to Our Planetary Understanding

This discovery provides a vital sense of recognition: our planet has navigated conditions like this before. It moves the discussion beyond mere speculation about a distant 'someday' scenario. The fact remains that the ice sheet previously experienced a state of complete disappearance under a climate that was only moderately warmer, yet it managed to persist in that retreated state for millennia.

This is not a prophecy signaling the absolute end of the ice, but rather the beginning of a deeper, more informed comprehension of ice sheet dynamics and resilience under elevated temperatures. It offers tangible historical context for contemporary climate modeling.
