NHAI Launches 'Arogya Van' Initiative to Plant Medicinal Trees Along National Highways

Edited by: An goldy

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) announced the launch of the 'Arogya Van' initiative on Tuesday, April 8, 2026. This project aims to establish thematic medicinal tree plantations on vacant land parcels adjacent to national highways. The endeavor marks a significant departure from previous greening efforts by specifically incorporating medicinal species to enhance biodiversity, support local wildlife, and bolster the resilience of roadside ecosystems.

The initial phase spans 17 land parcels across 11 states, including Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Tamil Nadu, with plans to plant approximately 67,462 medicinal trees. NHAI has selected 36 agro-climatically suitable native species, such as Neem and Amla, to ensure high survival rates and support the promotion of traditional Indian medical systems like Ayurveda. This stage involves the development of 17 sites covering a total area of 62.8 hectares.

'Arogya Vans' will be strategically positioned near high-visibility zones, including toll plazas, wayside amenities, and interchanges. This approach is intended to transform these areas into educational hubs showcasing India's rich medicinal heritage while maximizing public awareness. Selected species include Neem, prized for its antibacterial properties, and Amla, a potent source of Vitamin C, along with Imli (Tamarind), Jamun, Lemon, Gular, and Maulsari, all recognized for their therapeutic benefits.

The 'Arogya Van' project transitions from traditional aesthetic-focused landscaping to a thematic, knowledge-based approach that emphasizes the cultural and ecological significance of medicinal plants. NHAI has also earmarked approximately 188 hectares of vacant land for planting during the upcoming monsoon season to ensure superior survival rates and long-term sustainability. Implemented in accordance with Government of India guidelines for landscaping and plantation, the program aims to integrate ecosystem restoration with public education, demonstrating the vital role of native medicinal species in roadside ecology.
