Lemon8 Surges in Downloads Amid TikTok Uncertainty in the US

As concerns over TikTok's future in the United States grow, Chinese social apps Lemon8 and Xiaohongshu have seen a significant increase in downloads. Sensor Tower data reveals that Lemon8's downloads across iOS and Android tripled last week, briefly making it the most-downloaded free iPhone app on January 13.

Xiaohongshu, known as Little Red Book, has also risen to the top of Apple Inc's iPhone download charts, reflecting a shift among users seeking alternatives to TikTok. The app, which combines photos, videos, and life updates, is gaining traction among English-speaking users, many of whom identify as 'TikTok refugees.'

With TikTok facing a January 19 deadline to find a US buyer to continue operations, the app's future remains uncertain. The Supreme Court has indicated it may not oppose the law requiring a sale, placing pressure on ByteDance, TikTok's parent company.

Chinese authorities are reportedly considering the potential for Elon Musk to acquire TikTok's US operations, although Beijing prefers the app remain under ByteDance's ownership. TikTok's valuation in the US is estimated between $40 billion and $50 billion, presenting a significant financial hurdle for any potential buyer.
