「ポケモンイラストレーター」カードは、その成り立ちからして極めて特殊です。通常のパック販売は一切行われず、1997年から1998年にかけて日本の雑誌『月刊コロコロコミック』で開催されたイラストコンテストの勝者にのみ贈られました。公式には39枚が配布されたとされていますが、現在確認されているのは41枚のみです。このカードは、通常の「Trainer」ではなく「Illustrator」と記され、右下に筆のシンボルマークがある唯一のカードであり、その希少性は他の追随を許しません。

ニュージャージー州に拠点を置くゴールディン・オークションで41日間にわたり行われた入札は、最終価格1,330万ドルにバイヤーズプレミアムが加算され、総額1,649万2,000ドルに達しました。購入者のスカラムッチ氏は、Radial Healthの共同創設者でもあり、GoogleやTesla、Sinovation Venturesでの経歴を持つ人物です。同氏は、今回の購入は歴史的価値のある遺産を収集する「トレジャー・トローブ（Treasure Trove）」という広範な取り組みの一環であると述べています。
