Kerala Schools Launch Free Breakfast Program to Boost Attendance and Nutrition

Schools in Kasaragod, Kerala, have initiated a comprehensive free breakfast program, funded by the Panchayat, to combat student hunger and improve educational engagement. The initiative, which has allocated ₹7.5 lakh from the annual Plan Fund, currently supports approximately 500 students across six schools in the Balal panchayat. The primary goal is to ensure no child attends school on an empty stomach, with a specific focus on supporting tribal students and reducing school dropout rates.

The program offers a rotating menu of nutritious meals, including idli-sambar and upma, with some schools also providing milk and eggs daily. This approach aims to provide a balanced start to the day, which is expected to foster better concentration and overall well-being among students. Research consistently highlights the positive impact of school breakfast programs on student outcomes, linking regular consumption to improved school attendance, reduced absenteeism, and enhanced academic performance, particularly in subjects like mathematics and reading. Furthermore, these programs have been associated with better mental health, including reductions in hyperactivity and depression.

Kerala has a history of implementing child welfare initiatives, such as the 'Poshaka Balyam' (Nutritious Childhood) scheme, which already provides eggs and milk to young children. Launched in August 2022, 'Poshaka Balyam' aims to improve nutrition for children aged 3-6 years by providing eggs and milk twice a week, with plans to increase this to thrice weekly. This initiative is supported by organizations like MILMA and Kudumbashree, demonstrating a collaborative approach to child welfare.

The new breakfast program in Kasaragod aligns with the state's broader commitment to child nutrition and education. By addressing the fundamental need for nutrition, Kerala aims to create a more conducive learning environment and reinforce its dedication to holistic child development and educational equity. The program is anticipated to not only reduce attrition rates in schools but also serve as a replicable model for other regions seeking to enhance educational access and outcomes for all students.
