Anthropic Secures $30 Billion Series G Funding Amid Pentagon Contract Dispute

Artificial intelligence firm Anthropic announced on February 12, 2026, that it successfully closed a $30 billion Series G funding round, establishing a post-money valuation of $380 billion.

The substantial financing round was co-led by GIC and Coatue, positioning it as the second-largest private technology financing in history, surpassed only by OpenAI’s $40 billion round in 2025. Significant participation also came from D. E. Shaw Ventures, Dragoneer, Founders Fund, ICONIQ, and MGX, alongside portions of previously committed investments from Microsoft and NVIDIA. Anthropic intends to allocate the capital to accelerate frontier research, product development, and infrastructure expansion, solidifying its position in the enterprise AI market.

The company's financial trajectory shows rapid growth, with a projected annual run-rate revenue reaching $14 billion less than three years after recording its first revenue. The Claude Code model is a primary revenue driver, reportedly generating a run-rate revenue exceeding $2.5 billion, more than double its figure from the start of 2026. Chief Financial Officer Krishna Rao cautioned that despite the capital injection, miscalculations in AI investment returns could still result in financial instability, highlighting inherent pressures in the development race.

Simultaneously, Anthropic is navigating significant friction with the U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon) regarding limitations on the military application of its Claude AI models. The dispute centers on Anthropic's firm refusal to permit the use of Claude in fully autonomous weapon systems and mass domestic surveillance of U.S. citizens, despite the Pentagon's push for deployment for "all lawful purposes." Reports indicate the Pentagon is considering terminating its contract, valued at approximately $200 million, a resolution that could set an industry precedent for ethical boundaries in government partnerships.

Internal alignment on safety principles has also faced strain, evidenced by the resignation of Mrinank Sharma, Head of the Safeguards Research Team, on February 9, 2026. Sharma cited deep ethical concerns regarding commercialization pressures and interconnected global crises, including bioweapon threats, suggesting a divergence between the company’s stated safety focus—as a Public Benefit Corporation—and market dynamics.

In a move signaling global commitment, Anthropic officially opened its second Asian office in Bengaluru, India, on February 16, 2026, led by Managing Director Irina Ghose. India is identified as the second-largest market for Claude.ai, with nearly half of its usage focused on computational and mathematical tasks. The new office will focus on recruiting local talent to aid efforts in narrowing the AI language gap between English and Indic languages.
