Anthropic Closes $30 Billion Funding Round Amid Pentagon Contract Review

Edited by: gaya ❤️ one

Artificial intelligence developer Anthropic finalized a $30 billion Series G financing round on February 12, 2026, establishing a post-money valuation of $380 billion. The investment was co-led by Singapore's sovereign wealth fund GIC and the investment firm Coatue, positioning the transaction as the second-largest private financing event in technology history, following a $40 billion raise by rival OpenAI in 2025. The capital infusion, which included prior commitments from strategic investors such as Microsoft and Nvidia, is designated to accelerate frontier research, product development, and the necessary infrastructure scaling to address increasing enterprise demand.

The San Francisco-based firm, established in 2021, reported a robust commercial performance alongside the funding announcement. Anthropic’s annualized revenue run rate has reached $14 billion, marking a compound annual growth rate of more than tenfold over the previous three years. A significant contributor to this revenue is the Claude Code model, which alone generates an annual run-rate revenue exceeding $2.5 billion. Enterprise adoption metrics show that over 500 customers now spend more than $1 million annually, a substantial increase from only a dozen two years prior, with eight of the Fortune 10 corporations utilizing Claude services.

Despite the substantial capital, CEO Dario Amodei issued a cautionary statement, noting that misjudging the returns on AI investment could lead to bankruptcy, highlighting the high-stakes environment of frontier model development. Concurrently, the company faces scrutiny regarding a contract with the Department of Defense, valued near $200 million. Reports indicate the Pentagon is reviewing the contract due to Anthropic’s stated opposition to specific military uses of its Claude models, centering on the refusal to permit deployment for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons systems, which conflict with the company’s usage policies.

Organizational dynamics also shifted as Mrinank Sharma, the head of Anthropic's Safeguards Research Team, resigned on February 9, citing ethical reservations regarding mounting commercialization pressures. In a move signaling international strategy, Anthropic officially opened its second Asian operational hub in Bengaluru, India, on February 16, 2026. India has become the company's second-largest market for Claude, with nearly half of its usage dedicated to complex computer science and mathematical tasks. The new office, managed by Irina Ghose, will focus on local talent acquisition and tailoring applied AI expertise for regional enterprises, startups, and public sector entities, including new partnerships in education and agriculture, alongside efforts to improve model performance across ten widely spoken Indic languages.
