Russian Drone Incursion into Romania Prompts NATO Reinforcement of Eastern Flank

This earlier incident led Poland to invoke Article 4 of the NATO treaty, initiating consultations among allies regarding the threat. In response to these escalating provocations, NATO has launched "Operation Eastern Sentry" to bolster defenses along its entire eastern flank, from the Baltic to the Mediterranean Sea. This operation will involve a range of assets, including fighter jets from Denmark, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, alongside naval units and ground-based systems, aimed at enhancing deterrence and defense capabilities. Germany's contribution includes four Eurofighter jets, continuing its role in NATO's enhanced air policing mission in Romania, which has been ongoing since 2014.

Sweden's Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard expressed solidarity with Romania, calling the drone incursion an unacceptable violation of NATO airspace. The U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also condemned the development, stressing the need for allied consultation. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk dismissed any notion that the drone incursion into Poland was a mistake, underscoring the deliberate nature of Russia's actions. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy has consistently urged international partners to impose stronger sanctions on Russia, particularly targeting its energy trade, and has supported U.S. President Donald Trump's call for NATO nations to cease purchasing Russian oil.
