iPhone Fold release — Apple is doing the impossible
The Foldable iPhone Fold: Apple’s Most Ambitious and Costly 2026 Venture
Edited by: Tetiana Pin
Apple is cautiously venturing into the realm of foldable smartphones. Rumors suggest that the first flexible device from Cupertino could be named the iPhone Fold or iPhone Ultra, positioned as a hybrid between a standard phone and a compact tablet. Eschewing the trend of simply replicating existing form factors, Apple is reportedly developing its own unique interpretation of a foldable device rather than producing another imitation of the Galaxy Fold.
The new foldable iPhone, when folded, will have a compact form.
Industry analysts are already marking the debut of the foldable iPhone as a pivotal moment for the 2026 smartphone market. According to projections by SAG, Apple could capture as much as 28% of the foldable market share within its first year of release. While the device is expected to be unveiled in September 2026 alongside the iPhone 18 Pro series, the actual retail launch might be pushed to December. This delay is attributed to shortages in memory and other critical components, providing a three-month window to refine hardware and software, especially following the connectivity challenges observed with the iPhone 17 Pro.
Current leaks indicate that the foldable iPhone will adopt a "book-style" form factor. When closed, the device will likely be wider rather than elongated, resembling a small notebook. Upon opening, users will be greeted by a 7.8-inch internal display with a 4:3 aspect ratio, offering an experience similar to an iPad mini. A 5.5-inch external screen will provide a traditional smartphone experience for quick tasks. The chassis is expected to be remarkably slim, measuring just 4.5 mm when unfolded, utilizing a titanium frame for structural integrity.
To address the common issue of visible screen creases, Apple is reportedly employing dual-layer UTG/UFG glass and a redesigned hinge mechanism to minimize the fold and enhance durability. Due to extreme internal space constraints, Face ID may be omitted as the TrueDepth module is too large for the slim profile. Instead, Apple is expected to integrate Touch ID into the power button, a design choice seen in several iPad models. The rear camera system is rumored to feature a horizontal dual-module layout, drawing inspiration from the iPhone Air aesthetic.
In terms of pricing, the foldable iPhone is set to occupy the ultra-premium segment. The base model is anticipated to cost over $2000, making it the most expensive iPhone in the 2026 lineup. Apple is intentionally entering this niche later than its competitors, betting on a more polished design and distinct features compared to standard Android foldables. If successful, this project could significantly intensify competition with market leader Samsung and establish a new benchmark for the entire flexible device category.
