Microsoft Launches In-House AI Models MAI-Voice-1 and MAI-1-Preview
Edited by: Veronika Radoslavskaya
Microsoft has officially launched its first internally developed artificial intelligence models, MAI-Voice-1 and MAI-1-Preview, on August 29, 2025. This strategic move aims to foster greater self-sufficiency in AI development and reduce reliance on external partners, particularly OpenAI.
MAI-Voice-1 is a sophisticated voice generation model capable of producing one minute of audio in less than a second using a single GPU. This efficiency allows for its integration into Microsoft products like Copilot Daily for AI-narrated news summaries and Copilot Podcasts. Users can explore MAI-Voice-1's features in Copilot Labs, with options to customize voice characteristics, including various accents and emotional tones.
Complementing the voice model, MAI-1-Preview is a foundational language model trained using approximately 15,000 NVIDIA H100 GPUs. This model is engineered for efficient processing of daily instructions and information requests. MAI-1-Preview is currently accessible for public evaluation on the LMArena benchmarking platform and is slated for integration into specific Copilot text functionalities in the near future.
The development of these in-house models signifies Microsoft's substantial investment in building robust AI capabilities. By developing its own models, Microsoft seeks to gain greater control over its AI trajectory, potentially leading to cost efficiencies and accelerated innovation cycles. This pivot aligns with Microsoft's broader strategy to orchestrate a suite of specialized AI systems tailored to distinct user needs, promising long-term value and a strengthened position in the evolving AI ecosystem.
