A rare Rafflesia zollingeriana flower has been discovered in Kalipuro, Banyuwangi, East Java, according to the Directorate General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation (KSDAE). The KSDAE describes the finding as a miracle, noting the species' endemic status to Java.
On April 23, 2025, a team from the KSDA Region 13 Resort and researchers from BRIN identified at least 36 colonies of Rafflesia zollingeriana in the foothills of the Ijen Mountains. This discovery marks a significant natural population center for the endangered species.
Photographer Bayu Catur Pamungkas successfully captured the flower's beauty after a long wait since 2013. Rafflesia zollingeriana is a parasitic plant that lacks stems, leaves, and roots, appearing only as buds or blooming flowers. The flower has a diameter of about 40 centimeters and emits a pungent odor resembling rotting meat.
Reaching the flower's location required a challenging trek from Sumber Nanas Village, crossing forests and dry rivers. Bayu hopes that the local government will pay more attention to this extraordinary natural potential.
