A significant restoration project is set to revitalize the Mata Atlântica (Atlantic Forest) in Brazil. The initiative, led by SOS Mata Atlântica in partnership with Instituto Alok, aims to restore nearly 12 hectares of degraded land.

The project, named Floresta Áurea, will focus on two key areas within the São Paulo state. In the hydrographic basin of the médio Tietê, 7.4 hectares will be restored through the planting of 18,500 native seedlings. Additionally, 4 hectares within the Barreiro Rico Ecological Station will undergo restoration using drone-based direct seeding, an innovative approach to reforestation.

This area suffered from reduced floristic diversity due to a fire four years ago. The project aims to increase the Mata Atlântica coverage in municipalities where remnants have drastically diminished. The use of drones represents a technological advancement that could potentially reduce the costs associated with forest recovery in the future.
