Cinfães Youth Exchange Fosters Ecology and Personal Growth

Edited by: Olga Samsonova

An international non-formal learning initiative concluded in Oliveira do Douro, Cinfães, Portugal, involving thirty young participants from Germany, Spain, Slovakia, and Ireland. Titled "Connected with Nature: Roots & Responsibilities," the exchange was structured to develop personal growth alongside ecological awareness through intensive, nature-based learning modules. The program ran from April 7th to April 17th, 2026, prioritizing experiential exercises and outdoor education.

The local promoter, Casa d'Abóbora, an association focused on socio-cultural activities and fostering a sustainable network in the low-density rural area of Cinfães, organized the event. The official opening on April 8th, 2026, took place at the Casa Quinta da Calçada venue. During the ceremony, André Fonseca, the Councillor for Youth, encouraged the international attendees to engage fully with the region’s landscapes and the character of the local residents. The municipality provided each participant with a welcome kit, signaling Cinfães's commitment to youth engagement and international cooperation.

The educational venture was jointly promoted by Casa d'Abóbora and the German association Fahrten Ferne Abenteuer (FFA). FFA is a non-profit provider of youth services in Germany, known for organizing adventure-based learning trips that often utilize scouting methodology. This dedication to outdoor education and environmental respect mirrors the ecological focus of the Cinfães exchange, highlighting a shared commitment to non-formal educational advancement.

The ten-day event successfully integrated themes of adventure and personal challenge with an appreciation for the natural environment and cultural heritage intrinsic to the Cinfães municipality. Casa d'Abóbora, based in Aldeia, Cinfães, actively works to counter rural depopulation through cultural dynamization and sustainability projects, such as their ongoing water awareness initiative with high schoolers. This exchange served as a practical application of the international training initiatives in which the Portuguese organization regularly participates, reinforcing the value of intercultural dialogue and practical skill-building for contemporary themes like resilience and ecological responsibility.
