China's Military Leadership Faces Scrutiny Amid Anti-Corruption Campaign

On November 28, 2024, Miao Hua, a senior official in China's Central Military Commission, was suspended from duty pending an investigation into alleged serious violations of discipline, a term often associated with corruption in China. This action is part of an ongoing anti-corruption drive within the People's Liberation Army (PLA), which has seen at least nine generals and several defense industry executives removed since last year.

The spokesperson for the Chinese Defense Ministry, Wu Qian, confirmed the investigation but did not disclose specific details. Miao's suspension follows a broader pattern of scrutiny within China's military, particularly concerning the management of strategic missile forces. In July, the top official overseeing this sector was expelled from the ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP) due to corruption allegations.

In a related development, Wu Qian refuted claims that Defense Minister Dong Jun is also being investigated, labeling such reports as fabrications. Dong, who took office in December after the removal of his predecessor Li Shangfu over bribery allegations, has not been implicated in any wrongdoing according to official sources.
