The 2025 Hollywood awards season kicks off on January 7 with the annual Golden Globe Awards, where films like Wicked, The Brutalist, and Emilia Perez vie for top honors ahead of the Oscars in March.

Star-studded nominees include Timothee Chalamet, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, and Angelina Jolie, with comedian Nikki Glaser hosting the ceremony for the first time. The event will be broadcast live on CBS and streamed on Paramount+.

Emilia Perez, a Spanish-language musical, and The Brutalist, set in the aftermath of World War II, lead the nominations. The Brutalist tells the story of a Holocaust survivor, played by Adrien Brody, seeking the American dream in a three-and-a-half-hour runtime, making it a favorite for Best Drama.

Also nominated in the Best Drama category are Conclave, about the election of a new pope, and two films featuring Chalamet: A Complete Unknown, a Bob Dylan biopic, and the sci-fi epic Dune - Part II.

Unlike the Oscars, musicals and comedies compete in a separate category. Notable nominees include the box office hit Wicked and the dark romantic comedy Anora.

Winning a Golden Globe can significantly boost a film's Oscar chances. Scott Feinberg, executive director of the event, predicts that The Brutalist or Conclave could take home the Best Drama award, while the musical and comedy category remains unpredictable due to its diverse nominees.

Winners of the Golden Globes are chosen by 334 entertainment journalists from 85 countries, in contrast to the Oscars, which are awarded by 9,000 Academy members. Recent reforms have aimed to address ethical issues and diversity concerns in the selection process.

In television, The Bear, a series set in a restaurant, leads the nominations, followed by the police comedy Only Murders in the Building and the historical epic Shogun.
